The Samui airport certainly leaves a great first impression to tourists arriving on Koh Samui. The airport of Samui is certainly one of the most unique and charming airport in the world. The great thing about Samui airport is that it offers a tropical environment ideal to a holiday island such as Samui.

Samui airport was built by and is owned by Bangkok Airways. This boutique style Thai airline had strong hopes for Samui as a travel destination and at the time were the only ones willing to invest funds into a Koh Samui airport.

This of course has proven to be an excellent move on their behalf as they have been the only airline flying into Samui until recently and they have been able to expand their airline due to the success of the Bangkok - Samui route.

The Koh Samui Airport has recently also been opened to other airlines and Thai Airways has flights from Bangkok to Samui airport several times a day. Other airlines flying from abroad to Samui airport include Malaysian Airlines, Firefly and Berjaya Air.

An Outdoor Aiport

What makes Koh Samui airport so unique is that there are no indoor areas. All the operations at Koh Samui airport are located outdoors in what looks like giant bamboo huts. Samui airport has two separate terminals, one being a domestic terminal and the other being a international terminal.

Another charming aspect of Samui airport is that tropical train style vehicles pick up passengers from the airplanes to take them to the arrival hal.

The Koh Samui airport is located only a short drive away from the popular Chaweng beach and Big Buddha beach. You can quickly and cheaply book car hire at Koh Samui airport and travelers can also take a taxi or mini bus to and from Samui airport.
